New York claims overall victory in Clipper 07-08

New York crossed the finish line of Race 14 in first place at 0014 GMT (0114 BST) on Saturday claiming the overall title of Clipper 07-08. Duggie Gillespie and his team will claim the maximum ten points for securing their sixth first place in the ten-month series, giving them an unassailable lead over their nearest rivals, Hull & Humber. For Danny Watson and his team, hopes of an overall victory failed as the New York team stretched out a narrow lead over the rest of the fleet as they pushed towards Liverpool. Hull & Humber started Race 14 with a 3.5 point deficit to New York. New York finishes Clipper 07-08 with their final point tally in triple digits at 103.5 overall.

New York achieve their fourth consecutive podium position
Raffiny sponsored team New York, has secured their fourth podium position of the Clipper 07-08 Race by crossing the line in Santa Cruz at 12:38 local (17:38 GMT) to take third place in Race 8 from Hawaii.  Their result further catapults the US team up the leaderboard, making them a serious contender for the overall title.  Victory in Race 8 was claimed by Uniquely Singapore who overtook race leaders Nova Scotia during a nail biting light finish in light airs this morning.

Skipper of New York, Duggie Gillespie said, “I thought it was a very interesting race.  I’m quite happy with how we played our tactics but we clearly didn’t go the right way like some of the boats did.  Despite that I’m really pleased with the teams performance and with how the crew has developed.

“We had a real mix of conditions.  Predominantly upwind and only one day with kites.  The Pacific Ocean throws everything at you, and I’m really pleased we crossed it safely and successfully.”

Although being at the front of the pack for the majority of the race from Honalulu, New York lost out to the boats that made a tactical decision to head north.  Whilst Nova Scotia and Uniquely Singapore benefited from more favourable wind angles the US team struggled with a mixture of light airs and strong head winds.

Team Gibson 4th in the Worlds in Auckland

A report from Josie Gibson of Raffiny sponsored Team Gibson

This year the Woman’s match racing Worlds were held in Auckland, in Elliott 6s.  These  boats are not sailed in the UK, in fact or in Europe so team Gibson, sailing for the Royal Thames Yacht Club, travelled to Australia 2 weeks before the Worlds to compete in a feeder event with the aim of learning how to sail the boats.  The Harken run Sydney event was certainly a test for us and the extreme heat and jetlag did not favour the team however we learnt a great deal and the focus event was yet to come.

The team was fresh for the start of the Worlds and had a stable first days racing.  Something had clicked and were getting to grips with the boat.  The second day was a challenge for us but the team sailed into 5th to qualify for the quarters, having beaten some of the top seeds in the last day of the round robin.  We convincingly beat Silke Hahlbrok, from Germany, in the quarter finals to gain a place in the Semi finals.

We were up against Claire Leroy from France, the defending champion in the semis and her team beat us to go on to the finals.  The last day of racing brought fickle breeze and Claire was announced reigning  Champion for 2008 without sailing any races in the final.  This also meant there was no opportunity to race for 3rd place, placing us 4th on count back.   The event was tough shown by many of the top seeds being knocked out in early stages so we are extremely pleased to have repeated our 4th position on last year.

Valentine's Day victory for New York

New York claimed a Valentine’s Day victory by crossing the finish line at the East China Sea Gate at 0348 local time on 14 February 2008 (1948 GMT, 13 February 2008).  This is the third victory so far for the US team in Clipper 07-08 and the provisional result catapults them towards the top of the leaderboard and puts them in serious contention for an overall podium position.

On crossing the finish line New York’s skipper Duggie Gillespie said: “We’re very relieved to have crossed the line in first place. It has been physically hard race for us all and the crew have learned and experienced conditions I don’t think many will want to see again. We persevered throughout and I’m really pleased for the crew of New York that we have won this different but very tough leg.”
